Fire Chief's Association Meeting
My special thanks goes to Chief Glenn Linzmeier of the Blooming Grove Fire Dept. who gave me the opportunity to speak to the chiefs and deputy chiefs of 32 fire departments about my autism training program. Over 50 people were in attendance and I commend their openness in pursuing this area of training for their staff. Everyone seemed very receptive to the idea and I was honored to be able to present to this dedicated group of individuals.
Chris Lacey, BSME, MSBME, is a professional trainer, author, and founder of Autism ALERT. Chris has two children, one of whom has autism. She lives in south central Wisconsin where she strives to raise autism awareness and promote successful interactions with persons with autism and their communities.
Autism is a neurological condition that affects communication and social skills. It is estimated that as many as 1 in every 100 children born today will develop some form of autism. The training program for police, fire, EMS, and health care professionals takes a how-to approach to autism, enabling first responders to successfully recognize and interact with autistic persons in a variety of real-life situations. The parent training program approaches the many aspects parents can address ahead of time to prepare for emergencies.
