It's a great opportunity to meet your first responders! It happens across the US on the first Tuesday of August every year! Google your county and "national night out" to see where an event is near you! It's great for kids and adults of all ages!

This event will give you and your family a chance to meet police, fire, and EMS personnel as well as take a look at a lot of neat emergency vehicles! You might also get to meet some police dogs and horses.

If you have a disabled child, this would be a great event to familiarize them with emergency staff and vehicles. It would also be an excellent opportunity to speak with the first responders and let them know about any special needs your family may have.

Autism ALERT is now on Twitter

Autism ALERT, Inc. is now Twittering! Many thanks to those who have hosted Autism ALERT, and to the families who have shared their experiences with their first responders as well.

Like this website, the new website can be reached via www.AutismAlert.org

2009 Fundraiser : Make A Difference!

For a suggested donation of $10 or more, you too can make a difference in 2009!

These beautifully crafted pins get to the heart of the matter, with the puzzle piece representing autism, the heart signifying the love we have for our children, and the "making a difference" slogan recognizing what you do when you support Autism ALERT.

Monies raised will help to provide safety kits to low-income families with a child or children on the autism spectrum and provide training for caregivers and first responders.

Donations can be made via cash, check, or credit card (through PayPal). Over 100 people attended with a broad range of backgrounds. Representatives from local police, fire, EMS, state patrol, educators, social workers, and health care professionals were present for the morning session to learn how to recognize, communicate, and interact with someone with an autism spectrum disorder. The afternoon session was filled with caregivers and volunteer first responders who came together to learn about ways to keep our kids with autism safe.

Lakeland School provided refreshments and volunteers and made the day a success for everyone. I also had the honor of touring Lakeland, which is a beautiful public school in Walworth County for disabled children. Walworth County is truly lucky to have such a wonderful facility filled with dedicated teachers and professionals.

Dane County 911 Call Center

Today I spent the day learning about what happens when someone calls 911 in Dane County. Call centers are well-organized and complex places that use software, computer systems, and good old-fashioned maps to direct emergency and non-emergency calls.

When an emergency call comes in, it is logged and sent out to other stations where waiting operators simultaneously dispatch police, fire, EMS, or some combination thereof. The conference was well attended and boasted a broad range of participants including EMTs and paramedics, nurses, clinicians, physicians, police and fire, 911 dispatchers, social workers, educators, and much more.

I was fortunate to co-present with Lisa Peck, a child life specialist from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Children's Hospital. Many thanks to all who attended.

Autism Interaction Kits for First Responders Now Available

Autism Interaction Kits for first responders are now available! Since many individuals with autism do not respond to teddy bears, these kits were designed to assist with communication and make interactions more successful. The kits include a variety of visual, auditory, tactile, and oral items, as well as two, double-sided autism interaction cards containing information on autism, picture communication symbols, and an alphabet. These kits are great for squad cars, ambulances, fire trucks, emergency rooms, doctors offices, dentist offices, schools, therapy clinics, etc.

Open Autism Interaction Kit Link In A New Window

Maple Bluff EMS

On Wednesday, June 4th, I was joined by members of the Maple Bluff EMS, as well as representatives from Maple Bluff Police and Fire. Beyond training these first responders in how to recognize and respond to an autistic individual, we were joined by a local family. The young man with autism was a pleasure to have with us and showed a side of autism not often seen, that of a young person fully aware of his surroundings and wanting to interact and engage with others. Autistic children, like all children, want to fit in and be liked.

After the training, I received a lot of good comments and support regarding raising autism awareness in the area. I was graciously invited to host a booth on autism awareness at Marshall's upcoming Safety Day on Saturday, May 19th. The very nature of autism will challenge every instinct instilled into a highly trained police officer. Without awareness and training, these interactions can degrade into physical confrontations, which often end tragically and lead to litigation on the autistic person's behalf.

This article about law enforcement was published in the March/April 2008 issue of the Wisconsin Police Chief Association's Newsletter.

Open Article In A New Window

It details the various scenarios that may be encountered by law enforcement, as well as some suggestions for how to deal with them. This parent training covers the following topics: developing child info sheets, the importance of medic alert jewelry, 911 premise alerts, neighborhood watch for wanderers programs, tracking devices and home security, building relationships with your local first responders, preparing for an emergency, and much more! First responders will also be available to answer your questions. So don't miss the upcoming training! Several of the members had both personal and professional experience with autism and this led to many relevant questions about the disorder and how to work with it. A common concern was how to provide the highest level of care given the sensory issues surrounding autism.

After the training a local family came with their son to discuss their experiences with their autistic sons. After a tragic case in Wisconsin this past summer where an autistic boy wandered away from home and drowned, I began my quest to bring Project Lifesaver to Dane County. After several phone calls and promoting the idea at my autism training sessions, Lorie Wiessinger of the Dane County Sherrif's Department attended one of my programs and agreed to lead the effort. Together with community officers Mike Butler and Leslie Fox, their combined efforts have lead to a strong case for moving Project Lifesaver forward in Dane County. I am confident that we will get Project Lifesaver within the next year and I am immensely grateful for all of their efforts in seeing this project to fluition.

Oregon EMS and Fire Department

On Tuesday, October 9th, 20 EMS and fire fighters attended the autism training session at the Oregon Fire Department.
